The 2nd Moses
by Rod Jackson

All verses are quoted from the NASB anything in [square brackets] is added by me for clarity.

"But by a prophet [Moses/Jesus] the LORD brought Israel [/Christians] from Egypt [/sin], And by a prophet [Moses/Jesus] he [Israel/Christians] was kept." Hosea 12:13

"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me [Moses] from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him." Deuteronomy 18:15

"I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you [Moses], and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him." Deuteronomy 18:18 & 19

So God promised to raise up a prophet like Moses.

"Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, `Every [Israelite] son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.'" Exodus 1:22

At the time of Moses' birth Pharaoh was killing the male Israelite babies.

"Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi." Matthew 2:16

Around the time of Jesus' birth Herod was killing the male Israelite babies.

"But he said, `Who made you [Moses] a prince or a judge over us?" Exodus 2:14a

Moses was rejected by men...

"And coming to Him [Jesus] as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God," 1 Peter 2:4

Jesus was rejected by men.

Moses left the Israelites for a time and lived as a foreigner in a land away from his fellow Jews.

"So Joseph got up and took the Child [Jesus] and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. He remained there until the death of Herod." Matthew 2:14 & 15a

Jesus was away from His fellow Israelites for a time and lived as a foreigner in a land away from his fellow Jews.

"Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God." Exodus 3:1

Midian was a desert.

"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." Matthew 4:1

Jesus was led into the desert.

"After forty years had passed, AN ANGEL APPEARED TO HIM IN THE WILDERNESS OF MOUNT Sinai," Acts 7:30a

Moses was in the desert for 40 years.

"And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry." Matthew 4:2

Jesus was in the desert 40 days. 1 day for a year (cf. Numbers 14:34)!

"Now the LORD said to Moses in Midian, `Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.' " Exodus 4:19

Moses went back to the land where his fellow Israelites lived, after the one who was seeking his life was dead.

"But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, `Get up, take the Child [Jesus] and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead.' " Matthew 2:19-20

Jesus went back to the land where his fellow Israelites lived, after the one who was seeking his life was dead.

"This Moses whom they disowned, saying, `WHO MADE YOU A RULER AND A JUDGE ?' is the one whom God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush." Acts 7:35

Moses delivered the Israelites from Egypt.

"It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" 1 Timothy 1:15a

Jesus delivers spiritual Israel (Christians) from spiritual Egypt (sin).

"This man [Moses] led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years." Acts 7:36

"As in the days when you [Israel] came out from the land of Egypt, I [God] will show you miracles." Micah 7:15

God performed miracles through Moses.

"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him [Jesus] in your midst, just as you yourselves know" Acts 2:22

God performed miracles through Jesus.

"and he [Moses] received living oracles to pass on to you." Acts 7:38a

Moses passed on the words of God.

Jesus passed on the words of God.

"and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;" 1 Corinthians 10:2

The Israelites were baptized into Moses.

"For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." Galations 3:27

Spiritual Israel (Christians) are baptized into Jesus.

"Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator [Moses], until the seed [Jesus] would come to whom the promise had been made." Galations 3:19

Moses was the mediator between God and Israel.

"For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus," 1 Timothy 2:5

Jesus is the mediator between God and Spiritual Israel (Christians).

Therefore Jesus is the "prophet like Moses".
