What happened to the Ark of the Covenant
by Rod Jackson

All verses are quoted from the NASB anything in [square brackets] is added by me for clarity.

"Then Josiah celebrated the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover animals on the fourteenth day of the first month. He set the priests in their offices and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD. He also said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the LORD, `Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; it will be a burden on your shoulders no longer. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.'" 2 Chronicles 35:1-3

This is the last mention of the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament (chronologically speaking, that is). We see that it is during the reign of King Josiah.

"Then the LORD said to me [Jeremiah] in the days of Josiah the king,..." Jeremiah 3:6a

Also during the reign of King Josiah, Jeremiah the prophet got a message from God. In that message God said -

"`It shall be in those days when you [Israel] are multiplied and increased in the land,' declares the LORD, `they will no longer say, "The ark of the covenant of the LORD." And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it [the Ark of the Covenant] be made again. At that time they will call Jerusalem "The Throne of the LORD," and all the nations will be gathered to it, to Jerusalem, for the name of the LORD; nor will they walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart.'" Jeremiah 3:16-17

Prophesying about a future time God says that at that future time, the people of God will no longer talk about the Ark of the Covenant. But notice that it says in verse 16 "nor will it be made again", this means that at this future time the Ark of the Covenant will be destroyed!

The verse before this passage in Jeremiah says -

"Then I [God] will give you [Israel] shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding." Jeremiah 3:15

So God will give Israel shepherds, to lead them in God's ways. In the New Testament, we read about these shepherds -

"Be on guard for yourselves [the church elders] and for all the flock [Christians], among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood." Acts 20:28

Here we see Paul saying that God has given Spiritual Israel (Christians) shepherds (elders of the church) to lead them in God's ways. Therefore the time when the Ark of the Covenant is no more, is in the New Testament times!

So the next time you see a book telling you about the Ark of the Covenant being discovered, remember the bible says that it was destroyed and will not be anymore! Therefore when the book of Revelation, speaking about the 7th Trumpet says

"And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm." Revelation 11:19

It cannot be talking about a remade Ark of the Covenant. But has some spiritual meaning. This is not surprising, seeing the book of Revelation is highly symbolic.
