2 Become 1
by Rod Jackson
All verses are quoted from the NASB anything in [square brackets] is added by me for clarity.
Initially God created Adam from the dust of the ground on day 6. God decided that it was "not good for man to be alone".
"So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man [Adam], and he slept; then He [God] took one of his [Adam's] ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, `This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.' For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh." Genesis 2:21-24
In verse 24 of the above passage the bible states that it is "for this reason" a person will be joined to their spouse. What reason is given here?
I don't want to answer the question just yet. Think about the answer from the context and keep your answer in mind.
Also I want you to think about what it means to be "joined", as mentioned in verse 24.
"the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body." 1 Corinthians 6:13b
"Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, `THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.' But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body." 1 Corinthians 6:16-20
Why do people visit a prostitute? It is not to get married. It is to have sex. So one "joins" by having sex. As we see in the above verses. And the two become one flesh. Jesus said,
"But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh." Mark 10:6-8
Jesus quotes from Genesis 2:24 which we read at the start. "For this reason", what reason does Jesus give hear?
The reason is that God created them male and female. At creation God created one [Adam] and made him into two [Adam and Eve], but when one has sex the two become one. Jesus continues,
"What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." Mark 10:9
God is the one who does the joining. You have no choice or say in the matter. If you have sex with someone you will be joined to them.
"He [God] causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." Matthew 5:45b
Here we see that Jesus says that God cause the rain to fall. We, today, would say that the sun heats up the waters of the oceans etc, and turns it to steam. This evaporates into the sky and when it reaches a certain altitude the water condenses. When there is enough condensed water that is heavy enough to be pulled down by gravity then the water precipitates or rains on the "righteous and the unrighteous". In other words, Jesus says "God causes" to what we would say was merely caused by "natural law" or the laws of nature. Similarly, I believe that when Jesus says that "God joins", He is saying that it is part of the created laws of nature that when two people have sex they become one.
"Now it was after this that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon the son of David loved her. Amnon was so frustrated because of his sister Tamar that he made himself ill, for she was a virgin, and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd man. He said to him, `O son of the king, why are you so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?' Then Amnon said to him, `I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.' Jonadab then said to him, `Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your father comes to see you, say to him, "Please let my sister Tamar come and give me some food to eat, and let her prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat from her hand." ' So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, `Please let my sister Tamar come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.' Then David sent to the house for Tamar, saying, `Go now to your brother Amnon's house, and prepare food for him.' So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house, and he was lying down. And she took dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. She took the pan and dished them out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, `Have everyone go out from me.' So everyone went out from him. Then Amnon said to Tamar, `Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand.' So Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brother Amnon. When she brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, `Come, lie with me, my sister.' But she answered him, `No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this disgraceful thing! As for me, where could I get rid of my reproach? And as for you, you will be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.' However, he would not listen to her; since he was stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, `Get up, go away!' But she said to him, `No, because this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you have done to me!' Yet he would not listen to her. Then he called his young man who attended him and said, `Now throw this woman out of my presence, and lock the door behind her.' Now she had on a long-sleeved garment; for in this manner the virgin daughters of the king dressed themselves in robes. Then his attendant took her out and locked the door behind her. Tamar put ashes on her head and tore her long-sleeved garment which was on her; and she put her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. Then Absalom her brother said to her, `Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now keep silent, my sister, he is your brother; do not take this matter to heart.' So Tamar remained and was desolate in her brother Absalom's house." 2 Samuel 13:1-20
Finally this horrific story of rape. Where Amnon rapes his half-sister Tamar (they had the same father, David, but different mothers). Now I want you to especially notice what it says in verse 15 which I'll repeat below. This is straight after they have sex. The two Amnon and Tamar have become one.
"Then Amnon hated her [Tamar] with a very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her." 2 Samuel 13:15a
So sex and love cannot be the same thing. Moreover two becoming one does not mean that you will "force" the other person to love you.
